Watercolor Basics

Just getting started or need a refresher? This is the perfect class for you! Exercises will be simple and structured for building skills in coloring and controlling the medium. This is a great course to get introduced to or reacquainted with the medium. Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.October 13 to November 17-6 sessions. $120

Watercolor Alternative Techniques

Class assignments will be structured with a step-by-step approach both from photo references and still life. Students will learn how to build a painting by layering washes and by using multiple techniques to build a skillful final. Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Painting with Acrylic

This beginner course will teach students how to get started on a painting, color mixing, application, and techniques used with acrylic paint. Working from still life, students will also strengthen observation skills that can be applied to future work. Tuesdays, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.October 13 to November 17-6 sessions.

Melodee is an employee at
Utrecht who also works as a freelance illustrator and educator. She is currently teaching at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts and the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Her work is published in 16 children’s books, 6 of which have received Moonbeam and Teachers’ Choice Awards.

A long awaited summer is upon us here in Minneapolis, marking the first season of classes at Utrecht!

Utrecht Summer Art Classes will be held in classroom spaces below the store in the lower level of our building.
Utrecht classes offer an affordable and fun way to brush up on drawing and painting skills. Our classes are available to students 18 years and older, unless otherwise stated.

Phew! Last weekend was a busy one here at Utrecht. On Thursday, April 16, we hosted a reception for Minnesota art teachers (as well as some of their collegues from out of state) featuring artwork from some very talanted k-12 students from around the Twin Cities area. We had a great turnout, a big thanks to all of the teachers who attended!

Our demos with Melodee have been very popular, don’t miss her next demonstrations, What’s this brush used for? Thursday, May 7, and finally, I can’t get this skin tone right! Thursday, May 21. Also, stay posted for an upcoming screen printing workshop in May, TBA.

Twice a month on alternating Thursday evenings at 5:30, Melodee Strong is giving free demonstrations of several techniques many customers come to us with questions about. Melodee has 20 years of teaching experience and is a freelance illustrator.

March 5- How do I make this color?
Having trouble knowing how to get started on a painting maybe because you never had before or it’s been a while? Come to this 30-minute acrylic paint demo to learn the color wheel, a little color theory, and how to mix your paint.

March 19-What do I use this medium for?
Want to learn a little more about some of the techniques you can use with acrylic mediums? Want to know how to add collage to your painting? Check out this quick 30-minute demo and learn more!

April 9-I just can’t get this face right!
Are you drawing a portrait of someone and it’s just not looking right? This 20-minute demo will teach the proportions of the face and how to break down the planes and shapes of the face in order to create a more 3-dimentional version of your subject.

April 23- Why is watercolor such a pain to use?
Having trouble painting with watercolor? This 30-minute watercolor demo will show you ways of creating unique effects and tips on how to control watercolor.

May 7- What is this brush for?
Having trouble deciding what brush to use for your project? Wondering what brush will create a certain effect? This 20-minute demo will show you the wide range of possibilities brushes provide an artist in creating a work of art!

May 21- How do I paint skin tone?
This is probably the most asked question we get. Although color is relative to other colors around it, this 30-minutr acrylic demo will help you get started in creating skin tones of various ethnicities.
